Now, many of us want to know if these nifty gadgets can handle the rough stuff - bumpy roads, the grass in your backyard, or even the carpet in your home.

Understanding which terrains a hoverboard can handle is crucial - it's the difference between a smooth ride and a tough tumble. The good news: many modern hoverboards are up for the challenge!

In the following sections, I'll answer your question of "Can hoverboards go on grass, carpet, and gravel?" and more. So, let's get rolling!

Hoverboards & Terrain Types

Riding a hoverboard on gravel

Let's start by explaining why the kind of ground you're rolling over really matters when you're on a hoverboard. It's kind of like wearing the right shoes for the right activity - you wouldn't go hiking in flip-flops, right? The same goes for hoverboarding on different terrains.

Smooth pavement provides an ideal condition for standard hoverboards, which are designed for leisure riders. These surfaces allow for efficient motor function and minimal wheel resistance, offering the rider a smooth and enjoyable experience.

However, the game changes when you switch to more demanding terrains like grass, carpet, or gravel. When I first took my regular hoverboard from a carpet to grassy surfaces, I noticed the change instantly.

On the carpet, it felt like trying to wade through mud - sluggish and a bit wobbly. And on grass, well, it's fun, but you can tell the hoverboard is working overtime to keep things smooth.

Rough or soft terrains can significantly affect the hoverboard's stability and maneuverability.

Enter off-road hoverboards, also known as all-terrain hoverboards. Off-road hoverboards are designed to tackle everything from uneven sidewalks to outdoor trails. They're tougher, can carry more weight, and they're built to handle a good bump or two.

The secret to why some hoverboards handle off-road surfaces while others struggle on anything but concrete boils down to two features: the wheels and the motor.

The wheels are especially crucial, as the type (solid vs pneumatic), size, and tread all play different roles. Generally, the bigger the wheel, the more capable the hoverboard is at handling difficult terrain.

Hoverboard Tire Types

Closeup of solid tire on a hoverboard

When it comes to taking your hoverboard off-road, the right tires can make all the difference. There are two main types: solid and pneumatic - each with its own feel and style on different terrains.

Solid tires are usually reserved for standard hoverboards, perfect for riding on flat, smooth surfaces. Pneumatic tires, or air-filled tires, are usually for all-terrain hoverboards - great for tackling rough terrain.

I've experienced the feel of solid and pneumatic tires, so I'll break down the pros and cons of each.

Solid Tires

Solid tires are an industry standard for providing a worry-free ride on smooth surfaces. They're made of rubber or sturdy polyurethane foam, so they keep their shape without any help from air. The vast majority of hoverboards are geared with solid tires.

Pros

  • Puncture-proof: Solid tires have no air inside, so they're virtually puncture-free.

  • Low maintenance: No pump, no problem. They don't need half as much upkeep as pneumatic tires.

Cons

  • Poor ride quality: You'll feel those bumps and jolts more, as solid tires don't have the shock-absorbing properties that air-filled tires do.

  • Less traction: These tires might not provide as much grip, especially in wet or slippery conditions. Stability becomes a problem here.

Air-Filled Tires (Pneumatic)

Pneumatic tires, on the other hand, are like riding on a cloud - if a cloud could conquer off-road trails. They're crafted from a flexible rubber pumped with air - just like the tires you see on vehicles and motorbikes. Pneumatic tires can be tubeless or have an inner tube.

Pros

  • Comfortable ride: The air cushion within these tires allows for a smoother ride over varied terrain, offering better shock absorption.

  • More traction: Wet grass, gravel, carpet, you name it - the superior grip and stability of these tires can handle it.

  • Off-road capability: Pneumatic tires are typically the choice for off-road hoverboarding, thanks to their enhanced traction and ability to handle uneven ground.

Cons

  • Regular maintenance: You'll need to keep an eye on the air pressure and give them a pump now and then.

  • High puncture risk: While they're great for rough terrain, there's always the risk of punctures because they're air-filled. This can make them a hassle to repair.

Hoverboard Tire Sizes

You'd be surprised how much wheel size can transform your hoverboarding experience. While the type of wheel plays a key role, the size of your hoverboard's wheels dictates where you can ride.

If you were to tackle uneven surfaces with tiny wheels, it's not going to be the smoothest ride. Bigger tires mean you can roll over rough surfaces with ease.

A standard hoverboard generally has three different wheel sizes: 6.5 inches, 8.5 inches, or 10 inches. Let's break it down:

  1. 6.5-inch - This is the most common wheel size and is popular for its portability and ease of use. This size is ideal for indoor use or smooth pavement, plus it keeps the board light and maneuverable. You'll generally find wheels of this size on hoverboards for kids or beginners.
  2. 8.5-inch - Stepping up to 8.5 inches, this middle-ground wheel size can handle more varied terrains while still being easy to ride. It's a suitable option for those looking to ride over rougher surfaces without falling over. This is the most common size for an all-terrain hoverboard.
  3. 10-inch - For the ultimate off-road experience, 10-inch wheels are the best. These sizable wheels are designed to handle grass, gravel, and carpet easily. You'll enjoy a smooth experience even on the roughest off-road surfaces.

Hoverboard Tire Tread

Closeup of tire tread on hoverboard

When you're riding a hoverboard on grass, gravel, or carpet - basically any rough surface - tire tread is key to a good grip. The deeper and more pronounced the tread pattern, the better the wheels can grip uneven paths and maintain stability.

An effective tread pattern isn't just for show; it's about keeping the wheels engaged with your riding surface. It's the difference between getting over a rough patch smoothly or getting a front-row seat to your wipeout!

A smaller tread will be A-OK for a standard hoverboard designed for smooth sidewalks and surfaces. But, for an off-road hoverboard, the tread pattern should be deeper and/or wider to keep you steady on rougher surfaces.

Motor Power & Challenging Terrain

Riding a hoverboard on a forest trail

You will need strong motor power if you want to ride a hoverboard on grass, gravel, and carpet. Sure, I've talked about the importance of the tires, but that's only one part of the equation.

Both standard and off-road hoverboards come with electric motors housed in the wheels. The stronger the motors, the more power your hoverboard has to zip over tougher terrains.

A standard hoverboard typically features dual motors with an output of about 200-300 watts each. This is ideal for everyday, smooth-sailing surfaces.

But for the adventurers, the best hoverboards are those with anything above 300 watts. Hoverboards with dual 300-watt motors or more are what you're looking for.

These powerful motors are going to do all the grunt work needed to climb hills and navigate challenging terrain. Plus, that extra power translates into better braking and traction when it comes to slowing down or stopping, especially on a downhill.

Riding Tips for All Terrains

Whether you're zipping about on a smooth floor or navigating the bumpy backroads, mastering your hoverboard requires a blend of balance, focus, and a bit of courage. Here are some helpful riding tips for riding a hoverboard on any terrain:

  • Steady speed: Find a happy medium with your pace - too fast or too slow, and you might wobble. Whether it's a smooth or rough surface, just cruise along until you've got the hang of it.
  • Upright posture: It can be tempting to bend your knees on a hoverboard, especially on tougher terrain. Stand straight with your shoulders aligned over your feet to distribute your weight evenly across the hoverboard.
  • Eyes up: I've also been guilty of watching my feet on a hoverboard, but that could mean riding straight into an obstacle. Fix your eyes ahead to anticipate changes in the terrain and maintain balance.
  • Master basic terrain: It goes without saying that you should first get to grips with smooth surfaces before you head off the beaten track. For example, it's best to practice on carpet or grass before gravel in case you need a softer landing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to ride a hoverboard on grass, gravel, and carpet?

Indeed, it can be safe to ride a hoverboard on grass, gravel, or carpet, but this largely depends on the type of hoverboard you're using and your own riding skills.

It's more demanding to maintain balance and control on these surfaces, so make sure you're using an off-road hoverboard and are comfortable with the basics before venturing off smooth paths.

Will riding on rough terrain damage my hoverboard?

This depends on whether it's a standard or all-terrain hoverboard. If you were to ride a standard hoverboard over rough surfaces, you may damage the wheels and motor. That's why an all-terrain hoverboard with bigger tires and a powerful motor is best, as they're designed to tackle uneven surfaces.

For kids aged 6 to 12, finding the right hoverboard is all about safety, ease of use, and fun. That's why the Gyroor G13 stands out as our top pick for this age group. With a tested max speed of 7.2 MPH, it's fast enough to be thrilling but not so fast to overwhelm young riders.

The Gyroor G13 is fairly lightweight and can support up to 176 lbs, which is great for teens going through growth spurts. Then there are the 6.5-inch pneumatic tires that significantly improve ride comfort, especially over small bumps.

What makes the G13 a real winner for kids is the fun features! Much like the other models on our list, this hoverboard features color LED headlights and Bluetooth speakers for the ultimate riding experience. And, with 5.5 miles of range, there's plenty of room for exploration.

But most importantly, safety is a top priority when it comes to choosing a hoverboard for kids. The Gyroor G13 meets UL2272 safety standards, so you can rest assured your child will enjoy a safe, reliable, and fun ride.

If you crave a bit of adventure off the beaten path, then you're going to love the Gyroor Y1 Pro. It's the hoverboard equivalent of a rugged 4x4, perfectly geared for an all-terrain challenge.

What makes the Y1 Pro stand out? Power, and lots of it. With dual 350-watt motors, you've got an impressive 700 watts of power at your feet and a tested top speed of 9.7 MPH. This means when you encounter grassy hills, sandy beaches, or tempting dirt trails, the Y1 Pro doesn't just cope - it thrives.

Our tests showed that the Gyroor Y1 Pro can master inclines of up to 20%, making it highly capable on inclines. This is largely thanks to its 8.5" solid tires with deep tread, it an ideal off-road hoverboard. While pneumatic tires might add comfort, the durability of solid tires makes them a better choice for rugged use.

Now, don't think this power is only for the pros. Its multiple riding modes help accommodate different skill levels, making it accessible even for less experienced riders comfortable with its power. It's smart, user-friendly, and honestly, a blast to ride.

Now, let's talk about the cool tech stuff. There's an app that provides control via your smartphone - adjust the top speed, switch up the LED lights, or check for any issues. Plus, with the Bluetooth speakers, your beats can follow you on those off-road adventures.

It maintains a confident and comfortable feel even across uneven terrain. Riding the Hover-1 Titan on grass or dirt feels almost as smooth as cruising on pavement - that's how comfortable the ride is!

Zooming around at a verified 7.8 MPH with a 6.4-mile range, the Titan is perfect for those leisurely rides where you're soaking in the sights, be it on a college campus or in your local park. It's not the fastest hoverboard out there, but it will get you from point A to point B in comfort.

If you're dipping your toes into the hoverboard pool and don't want to empty your pockets in the process, the Jetson Spin offers the best value. It's not too fast or fancy, but just right for a fun, easy-going ride.

As one of the best cheap hoverboards, the Jetson Spin manages a modest 6.7 mph max speed, perfect for a leisurely spin around the house or the block. It has a pretty small range of 5.1 miles per charge, and the charging time isn't the best either, but it's all you need for those short, sweet rides.

The Spin is lightweight, making it ideal for kids and new riders. We also really like the side lights which are good for visibility in low-light situations.

Sure, it doesn't have advanced features like Bluetooth speakers or long battery life, but it still promises hoverboard fun without breaking the bank.

So, you're thinking about getting into hoverboarding but feel a bit wary? Say hello to the Gotrax Edge, your perfect first hoverboard. I know getting onto a hoverboard for the first time can be daunting, but the Gotrax Edge promises to keep your first steps (or rolls, rather) safe and enjoyable.

One feature that really helps ease beginners into the experience is the self-balancing mode. This feature makes getting on and off the board a breeze, reducing the chances of those initial falls. It's particularly reassuring if you’re nervous about keeping your balance.

Once you've got the hang of balancing on the board, you can expect a nice, beginner-friendly riding experience. The Gotrax Edge has a modest tested max speed of 5.9 MPH, so it's quick enough to be fun but not so fast that it becomes intimidating.

Then there are the LED-lit wheels. Not only do they add visual flair, especially at night, but they also add an element of safety by making you more visible. Sadly, there are no Bluetooth speakers here.

With a battery capacity of 50.4 Wh, we didn't expect a lot of range. In our tests, the Edge got 3.4 miles before shutting down. While performance is basic, it offers an affordable entry point into the hoverboard market.

One great feature that most other affordable hoverboards lack is the IP54 water and dust resistance. You can take this hoverboard out without worrying about a few raindrops or dusty paths.

For kids who want to take part in the off-roading fun, the Gyroor Y1S is an excellent option. The Y1S is the fourth hoverboard from Gyroor to make our list and it all boils down to its excellent build quality. It held up nicely to the wear and tear of more than a handful full-charge rides on challenging terrain.

Although not as powerful as the Y1 Pro, the 500W motors clocked a top speed of 7.2 MPH in our tests.  This is pretty much the sweet spot for thrill-seeking kids 9 years and up.

5.3 miles of tested mileage is plenty for most joy rides, but the board is slightly heavy relative to its overall performance. However, it is extremely well-built with a one-piece aluminum alloy frame and it felt as sturdy after a month of riding as on day one.

It boasts numerous smart features including Bluetooth speakers with decent sound quality, LED lights, a portable handle and smart app control. We love that you can change between kid and adult mode on the app as it allows you to get comfortable with the hoverboard before unleashing its full power.

Another worthy mention is the Hoverstar HS2.0. Over the years, this is one of the best hoverboards under $100 we've tested.

It is comfortable to ride - the 6.5" solid tires are wide and have deep tread for solid grip on changing surfaces. We didn't expect a lot out of two 200W motors, but 5.4 MPH is decent for a quick recreational ride for the kids. With 4.2 miles of tested range, it still beats the Gotrax Edge which is similarly priced.

The Hoverstar HS2.0 is highly portable. It weighs just 12.5 lbs, but we found the weight capacity of 165 lbs to be limiting.

The 24V 4 battery is UL certified, but charging is a bit slower than we'd have wanted. Quite impressively, this board includes music speakers despite its low price and the chrome design looks really sleek.

The Hover-1 Sypher offers a unique aesthetic in a market with many similar designs. If you're looking something with visual appeal, the customizable LED display of this hoverboard has you covered.

We're quite impressed that the Sypher offers such a wide set of features at a price that most budgets can accommodate. In our tests, the 300W hub motors delivered a top speed of 6.7 MPH, which is slightly above average and we got 5.4 miles of range on a single charge.

While the Sypher isn't the fastest hoverboard on the market, you still get a lot for your money in terms of performance and functionality. Bluetooth speakers, app control, three riding modes and the innovative LED display, to name a few.

This hoverboard is sturdy and well-built. There are no obvious weak points or flaws in its design and the structural integrity is on par with more premium models. It's fairly heavy at 16.2 lbs though, so kids may find it difficult to carry around. The load capacity of 220 lbs makes up for that as it can be ridden by both kids and adults.

If you're all about fancy features and customizations, the Sypher offers a lot of fun at a low price. The Bluetooth connectivity was a bit buggy at times and the audio quality of the speakers isn't the best, but these issues are understandable given the price point.

    Our Review Process

Testing hoverboard on grass and gravel dirt trail

We rigorously tested the market-leading hoverboards using racing-grade GPS gear, focusing on key aspects: speed, motor performance, battery life, durability, comfort, portability, features, and value.

Each model underwent at least 50 miles of testing to gauge long-term reliability, complemented by user feedback and verified reviews. Our selections highlight specific strengths like Best Overall, Budget Pick, and Best for Off-Roading, based on performance relative to price and manufacturer reputation. This approach ensures our recommendations are not only top-performing but also durable and trustworthy.

All our tests were conducted by a 175 lbs (79 kg) rider. This benchmark is important to consider: lighter riders may experience slightly better performance than our reported data suggests, while those heavier might find the hoverboard's performance marginally lower.

    Considerations Before Buying a Hoverboard

You've explored some of the best hoverboards on the market, and now you're probably wondering which one is best for you or the lucky person you're buying for.

Sure, these reviews are super helpful in narrowing down your options, but knowing exactly what to look for makes all the difference. That's why we've put together a handy buyer's guide!

We'll lay out the key things to keep in mind while making your choice.

    Safety Certifications

Let's talk safety first - because zipping around on a hoverboard should be fun, not a worry. Whether for a kid or an adult, a hoverboard's safety is something you can't overlook. Fancy features don't mean much if the board isn’t safe.

UL certifications allow you to ride confidently, knowing your hoverboard has passed stringent electrical and fire safety tests. The UL2271 certificate is specific to the battery, while UL2272 covers the hoverboard's electrical systems.

Always look for these certifications - they're your assurance that the hoverboard is up to the mark in safety standards.

    Range & Battery Life

The last thing any excited rider wants to experience is their battery giving up before they've even started enjoying the ride. This is why you should check your chosen hoverboard's range and battery life.

Look for a battery that charges reasonably quickly (typically 2-4 hours) and provides a usable ride time or range suitable for your needs (often 45-90 minutes or 5-10 miles).

Also, consider your hoverboard’s use - short fun rides or longer commutes. Remember that how far a hoverboard goes and its battery performance are influenced by rider weight, terrain, and weather conditions.

    Speed & Motor Power

You'll find that hoverboards come in a range of speeds, and the right one for you depends on how fast you're comfortable going. While the average hoverboard cruises at around 5-7 mph, some can push to even 10 mph, which can feel speedy.

Remember, a speed that feels normal when walking can feel pretty fast on a hoverboard, especially for beginners or when you're riding over uneven terrain.

Generally, a higher motor power means greater speed. 500W motors are the standard, great for smooth rides and tackling minor obstacles. The fastest hoverboards typically have anything above 500W, meaning you'll enjoy greater speed and smooth cruising over rougher terrain.

    Wheel Size & Type

You'd be surprised by how much the hoverboard's wheels matter!

Smaller wheels (around 6.5 inches) are great for smooth, flat surfaces like indoor spaces and sidewalks. You'll get solid stability, especially as a beginner. But if you're looking to take your hoverboard on the roads less traveled, larger wheels (8.5 inches and 10 inches) are ideal.

You must also look at the wheel type - solid or pneumatic. Solid wheels are great for smooth surfaces and they're less prone to punctures. Pneumatic wheels are air-filled, so they can be more prone to punctures, but they offer much better traction and comfort for those more challenging terrain.

    Weight Capacity

Hoverboards aren't one-size-fits-all. They're designed with a specific minimum and maximum weight limit. Choosing a hoverboard that can comfortably support your weight is essential for not only performance but also your safety.

Many hoverboards can handle up to 220 lbs, which works for most people. If you're lighter or heavier, you'll need to look for models that can carry your weight.

    Pro tip

If you're buying a hoverboard for a child, consider getting one with a higher weight limit to accommodate their growth. This way, they can still use their hoverboard for years to come!

    Build Quality

This may seem like a no-brainer, but the build quality of a hoverboard can make or break your riding experience. Whether it's for getting around or just for fun, don't overlook the materials and construction quality.

A good-looking, affordable hoverboard might be tempting, but it's the board's inner components and how they're put together that really counts.

If you can't check the build in person, dive into user reviews online - they're often the best indicator of the board's reliability. Pay attention to comments about the material's durability, battery, and overall performance. Aluminum alloy is always a safe bet for the frame.

    Portability

Rasmus Barslund from ERideHero carrying a hoverboard to show off its portability

Hoverboards aren't all about gliding; sometimes, you've got to carry them. If you plan on taking your hoverboard with you on adventures, its weight is something to consider.

Most hoverboards weigh between 15 and 25 pounds. Heavier boards can be manageable for short distances, but it can be tiring to carry them for longer walks or going up steep inclines where you might need to carry them.

Also, think about the terrain and whether you'll need to take a charger along. Those steep hills might mean you end up carrying your hoverboard more than riding it, so keep that in mind!

    Price

The price tag of a hoverboard can tell you a lot. You don’t always have to choose the most expensive model to get the best quality. It's about finding that sweet spot where quality meets affordability.

The goal is to find a hoverboard that offers the features you need at a price that makes sense for you. Sometimes, it's worth paying a bit more for durability and better performance.

Remember that the cheapest option might save you money upfront but could cost more in the long run if it breaks.

    Rider Type

Finally, you need to consider your own skill level or the experience of the person you're buying it for. After all, you don't want to buy a super fast, high-tech hoverboard for a complete beginner or an adult hoverboard for a child.

For younger and less experienced kids, look for hoverboards designed specifically for their age group. These usually cap their speed at a safe 5-7 mph, perfect for keeping things safe but still fun.

If you're shopping for an adult or teen, there are many more options available for those who want higher performance.

You also need to consider where the rider wants to go and if they're experienced. For example, off-road hoverboards can be an absolute blast but are best left to those with more experience.

The good news is, yes – hoverboards made today under specific safety standards are much safer than the early versions. However, it's still smart to know about the past recalls and how to use hoverboards safely. This guide covers the essentials for 2026.

    Timeline of Hoverboard Recalls

Close-up of a Denver hoverboard placed on a stone ledge with a blurred nature background

The years 2016 and 2017 were the peak for hoverboard safety issues. Many models were recalled then, mainly because their lithium-ion batteries posed risks like overheating, smoking, catching fire, or even exploding.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) tracks these recalls. Below is the list of recalls since 2016 from CPSC data. While recalls are much less common now, thanks to better standards, they haven't disappeared completely – the latest was in December 2023. Still, the trend clearly shows that safety has improved significantly.

As of early 2026, there hasn't been a hoverboard recall in over two years – the longest period without one since the safety issues began.

Since 2016, there have been a total of 23 hoverboard recalls. Around 1,115,200 hoverboard units have been affected. Fire hazards (battery overheating) have been the main reason for recalls.

    Understanding UL 2272 Certification

    hoverboard and fire extinguisher

So, what changed? A key factor was the introduction of UL 2272 certification. This safety standard comes from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent organization that tests product safety. It was created specifically to tackle the risks found in early hoverboards.

UL 2272 involves a tough set of tests for the entire hoverboard system – including the battery, charger, wiring, and motors, plus its overall construction. It checks how the board holds up against impacts, water, vibrations, and temperature changes. Most importantly, it includes tests focused on preventing overheating and short circuits, which were the main causes of earlier fires.

Getting UL 2272 certified is a rigorous process. Reputable brands now widely use this standard. For buyers in 2025, looking for the official UL 2272 certification mark is the most crucial step when buying a hoverboard. It means the product meets strict safety requirements designed to prevent past hazards.

How to Choose A Safe Hoverboard (And How to Use it)

Choosing a certified board is step one, but how you handle your hoverboard also makes a big difference. Here are key practices for safe selection and use:

    Buying:

    1. Only buy hoverboards with an UL 2272 certification (there will typically be a mark on the board/package or in the product description).
    2. Be wary of extremely cheap hoverboards (under $100), as brands may cut corners on safety or quality.

    Charging:

    1. Always use the original charger.
    2. Don't overcharge - unplug the hoverboard once it is fully charged. Don't leave it charging overnight.
    3. Charge in a dry, well-ventilated area away from flammable items.

    Storage:

    1. Store indoors, away from heat sources or direct sunlight

    Essential Riding Safety Practices

While UL certification tackles fire risks, preventing falls requires safe riding habits.

    • Supervise Kids: Ensure children have proper instruction, wear their gear, and are supervised while riding.
    • Wear Protective Gear: This is critical. A properly fitted helmet is non-negotiable. Bicycle or skateboard helmets that meet safety standards (like CPSC or ASTM) are good choices. Knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards are also highly recommended, especially for new riders and kids.
    • Learn the Basics: Practice getting on/off, balancing, and turning in a safe, open area away from traffic before riding in busier places. Read the manual and see our guide on how to ride.
    • Know Local Rules: Check and follow any local laws about where you can ride hoverboards.

    Conclusion & Stance on Recalls

The early days of hoverboards had serious safety problems, mostly related to battery fires. Thankfully, the widespread adoption of the UL 2272 certification standard has made today's hoverboards much safer.

For consumers in 2026, the path to safe hoverboarding is clear: choose models that are UL 2272 certified and practice responsible use. This includes safe charging, proper storage, careful handling, and always wearing a helmet and other protective gear. By choosing wisely and riding smartly, you can confidently enjoy the fun hoverboards offer.

Gotrax Hoverfly E3 Hoverboard Review https://eridehero.com/gotrax-hoverfly-e3-hoverboard-review/ Wed, 10 Jun 2020 10:41:11 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=1999 With upgraded features from the E2 and unique body design, the Hoverfly E3 from Gotrax is a great hoverboard for young people or adult beginners. It has a strong motor and battery, decent speed and range, and a very affordable price tag. If you’re on the hunt for quality hoverboards that don’t cost a fortune, the E3 is definitely worth investigating. Here’s everything you need to know:

    Range and speed

The E3 is equipped with a 500-watt motor and a 36-volt battery. This gives the hoverboard a top speed of 8.1 mph and up to 5 miles per charge. That’s on the lower side for many hoverboards, but for its price, it’s comparable to other boards you’ll see. It’s also faster and gives more range than the 400-watt E2, which has a top speed of 6.5mph and 4 miles of range.

We recommend you charge the hoverboard after each ride to keep the battery in good shape. When significantly drained, it takes about 2-3 hours to recharge, which is not long at all.

When it comes to the health of your hoverboard, caring for the battery is a key responsibility. Only use the approved GOTRAX power adapter for charging. Keep your hoverboard and charger in a dry, indoor space that doesn’t get hotter than 104-degrees or below freezing.

    Construction and design

The E3 has a striking, futuristic look. It’s a new design in the Hoverfly series and features handles, so it’s easy to carry the hoverboard when you aren’t riding it. For colors, you can choose between black, blue, or silver. When cleaning the body of the hoverboard, don’t use alcohol or any other corrosive chemicals. A soft, damp cloth is all you need.

The hoverboard itself weighs 22 pounds, while Gotrax recommends riders do not exceed 220 pounds. Speed and range are affected by rider weight. What about the tires? This is a hoverboard designed for off-roading, so it has 8.5’’ tough all-terrain rubber tires. Ride across the grass, gravel, bumpier pavement, and more.

    gotrax hoverfly e3 2

    Safety

All Gotrax hoverboards have a UL 2272 certification, so they’ve passed rigorous safety tests. The E3 also has a self-leveling mode. When engaged, this mode causes the hoverboard to self-level, making it easier to get on and off the board. It’s ideal for beginners who are just learning how to balance.

No matter what skill level you are, you should wear the proper safety gear like a good helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, and so on. Ride very slowly until you feel comfortable. Even though 8.1 mph may not seem that fast, it feels very fast when you’re actually at that speed. No one wants to experience what it’s like to crash at 8.1 mph.

    Bluetooth speakers and lighting

Lots of people like listening to music while they ride, but wearing headphones can be dangerous. You won’t hear what’s going on around you as well. Luckily, the speakers on the E3 let you rock out and stay safe.

They’re Bluetooth speakers, so you connect them to a Bluetooth-enabled device like a smartphone. For lighting, there are blue LED lights on the side and top of each wheel. There are also two LED headlights. We don’t recommend riding at night, but if you are out and it’s on the dark side, the lighting will help keep you safe.

    Customer service

The support team for Gortrax hoverboards is based in Dallas, Texas. They’re available Monday-Friday by email, phone, or live chat on their website. If unopened, you can return the hoverboard within 30 days. The limited warranty is good for 90 days.

If you want a warranty service, you'll need to present a copy of the sales receipt from an approved retail partner. If you ordered right from Gotrax, they'll just need an order number. When you buy a hoverboard from Gotrax, you agree to not use it for competition, rental, or commercial use.

The warranty only covers parts or issues due to manufacturer defects. Treat your board with care to avoid damage from crashing, rain, and other issues.

    Downsides

The Hoverfly E3 is a great choice for beginner riders, but you may outgrow its charm quickly. It’s also not a great choice if you’re looking for a hoverboard that’s faster and has a longer range. This is not a board for commuting, so plan on only using it for fun or quick errands.

two kids sitting on porch smiling with their hoverboards

    Who should buy this?

This hoverboard appears to be designed for beginner riders. On its product page, it features young people, but it’s also a good board if you are an adult who is interested in learning to ride.

As long as you’re within the recommended weight perimeters, this hoverboard is a solid choice! It’s also a good fit if you want to go off the beaten path. The all-terrain wheels are equipped to handle rougher ground like grass and gravel. At an affordable price, the board is great for riders on a budget.

    Final thoughts

An upgrade to the E2, this newest hoverboard from Gotrax is a great starter board. You’ll get upgrades like a more powerful motor, faster speed, longer range, and larger all-terrain wheels. The motor is 500 watts and you get a zippy top speed up to 8.1 mph.

For range, you get around 5 miles per charge. With this speed and range, it’s a board meant for quick trips or fun excursions both on the road and off, thanks to all-terrain tires. There are certainly faster and more powerful hoverboards out there, but at this very affordable price range, the Hoverfly E3 is comparable to other boards.

Features like self-balancing mode, Bluetooth speakers, and good lighting add to the experience. To make your board last as long as possible, always use the included Gotrax charger, store indoors, and follow instructions in the user manual.

Gotrax makes high-quality hoverboards, so when cared for, yours will keep you entertained for many, many charging cycles.

How Does a Hoverboard Work? https://eridehero.com/how-does-a-hoverboard-work/ https://eridehero.com/how-does-a-hoverboard-work/#respond Sun, 13 Oct 2019 19:50:00 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=219 A lot of people ride hoverboards, but few understand the technology behind it. Today, we carefully explain how a hoverboard works.

    Introduction

When people hear the word “hoverboard”, they often think of the Marty McFly hoverboard from the 1989 movie “Back To The Future” movies. However, we haven’t been able to realize the self-hovering board just yet.

What we do have are self-balancing scooters (also nicknamed hoverboards). These hoverboards don’t actually hover but instead ride on wheels. As disappointing as it may sound, they’re lots of fun and they are great for commuting as well.

Let’s take a look at the technology inside today’s hoverboards.

    Hoverboard components inside

    What’s Inside a Hoverboard?

A hoverboard contains quite a few components under the hood. In a standard hoverboard, you’ll find the following:

    • A battery
    • A logic board
    • 2 gyroscopes (one for each wheel)
    • 2 motors (one in each wheel)

Time to explain what these things are.

    The Battery Pack

    Hoverboard battery pack

The powerhouse of your hoverboard. This is quite self-explanatory. Without it, you wouldn’t be able to ride your hoverboard.

Almost all hoverboards use lithium-ion batteries between 36V and 42V.

Lithium-ion batteries are often seen in electric rideables because they’re lightweight and have a high energy density, giving you more mileage per charge in a small package.

It is crucial for hoverboards to be lightweight in order to get the best mileage and to climb slopes and terrain and whatnot.

The lithium-ion batteries also discharge much slower than other types of batteries. Even if you leave your hoverboard in the dust for months, you can come back to an almost fully charged hoverboard right away.

    The Gyroscopes

    Gyroscope on a self-balancing scooter

Next up are the gyroscopes. This is where the self-balancing technology comes into play. Each wheel sends separate speed and tilt information to the gyroscope next to it.

The gyroscopes process that information and send it on to the main logic board.

If your hoverboard is acting up, it is most likely because something is out of sync with the gyroscopes. That’s when you need to calibrate your hoverboard again. A calibration will reset the current state of your gyroscopes so all values get to zero again. This will most likely fix your issue.

    The Logic Board

Main logic board in a hoverboard

Just like a computer has a motherboard, a hoverboard has a logic board. In fact, most electronic devices have one.

Much like a brain, the entire life of the hoverboard is controlled from here. It receives information (for instance from the gyroscopes) and based on that information it gives commands to other parts of the board.

For instance, some hoverboards have different riding modes. Which riding mode you’re in is controlled by the logic board. The LED lights, power consumption, speeds, and more are controlled from here as well. The power on/off button also sends a signal to the logic board, either turning on or off the unit.

To put it simply, the logic board ties all the other pieces together.

    The Wheels & Motors

    hoverboard wheels and sensors

Usually, a hoverboard has two motors. One in each wheel. This allows the two wheels to accelerate and move independently from one another at different speeds. If this wasn’t the case, you wouldn’t be able to turn. Imagine that for a boring ride…

Each wheel is geared with sensors that read the speed (rpm) and tilt at any given time while riding. This information is what gets sent on to the gyroscopes.

It may just look like a wheel, but there are actually a few technological things going on behind the scene.

    The Technology Inside The Footpads

Below the footpads on your hoverboard are two switches on each side. These switches are used to detect how you move on the hoverboard.

There is one switch located in the front and one at the back. Once these switches are activated, the switches tell the wheels to accelerate in a particular direction.

For instance, if you tilt your right foot forward on the footpad and your left foot backward, the following will happen:

    • The right front switch activates, telling the right wheel to accelerate forward.
    • The left back switch activates, telling the left wheel to accelerate backward.

This would, in turn, make your board turn to the left on the spot. If you have trouble riding your hoverboard, this guide will help.

Now, the more you lean in a particular direction, the greater a tilt the wheels will sense. This information is passed to the gyroscope and onto the logic board. This results in a smooth, gradual ride.

Depending on how much you’re leaning in a direction, the acceleration will follow accordingly. If this wasn’t a feature, even the slightest of tilts would for the board at full speed in a direction.

    Wrapping Up

Although there’s plenty of room for getting even geekier with the hardware inside a hoverboard, we’ll leave it here.

This post should have given you a basic but useful insight into how a hoverboard works at its core. Simple yet effective technologies come together to give you a pleasant riding experience.

Keep in mind that not all hoverboards are alike. Some hoverboards may function differently from this, but the technologies described are the most commonly used by hoverboard brands manufacturers around the world.

How To Customize a Hoverboard https://eridehero.com/how-to-customize-a-hoverboard/ https://eridehero.com/how-to-customize-a-hoverboard/#respond Fri, 11 Oct 2019 19:40:00 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=196 Today we share 3 cheap and simple DIY tips to help you customize a hoverboard to match your personal style.

Lots of hoverboard owners like to spice up the look of their ride with some unique and personal twists. Today we share with you a few simple tips and tricks to customize a hoverboard so it stands out in the flock.

    Introduction

    razor hoverboard with skin

A lot of the hoverboards available on today’s market look basic or ‘dull.’ For kids with a prime imagination, the basic designs may not satisfy them. Getting to customize their hoverboard riding experience makes for a fun day and lots of cool experiences onwards.

Although your kid may not have the fastest hoverboard in the world, everything may feel faster all of a sudden when you spice up the hoverboard a little visually.

    Hoverboard Skins & Stickers

Commonly referred to as hoverboard skins, stickers or decals, these cool-looking pieces are ready to get put on your self-balancing scooter right away.

Hoverboard skins come in all kinds of sizes, shapes, and variants. You can get anything from galaxy prints, camouflage decals to simple solid colors. You can get clean layouts or vibrant and fun designs for your kids.

Amazon is probably the best place for exploring the hundreds of different hoverboard skins available. There are other websites with hoverboard skins, however. It’s only a Google search away.

    Tip
You need to find a skin that is compatible with your hoverboard. Not all hoverboards are the same. Make sure you check that what you get fits your board. You may contact the seller if you're unsure that a particular decal will fit.

    DIY Customization

    pattern ductape

Instead of a solution that is ready out-of-the-box, you may also consider creating everything from scratch. This gives you full control and lets you have a fun day with your kid, unleashing your creative side.

The level of detail is, of course, fully up to you. Whether you wanna go ahead and attach some simple stickers from the local store or create a full design with advanced patterns, it should all be possible on a budget.

An X-Acto knife, and maybe some designer duct tape with interesting print will take you a long way.

Carefully wrap your hoverboard using the designer duct tape in the areas you want to be covered and follow it up by cutting excess tape off using our X-Acto knife.

    X-Acto Knife

The more time you take, the better the result will be. Also, don’t worry about covering footpads, charging ports or LED lights at this point. All this you will carefully cut off later using the knife.

It’s possible that some of the duct tape will start to peel eventually but then you can simply peel off the entire area and replace it. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be a quick fix.

Place stickers wherever you see fit. A cool place that is often overlooked could be the wheels.

Depending on the tape, you may wanna watch out for overlaps in the design so things align properly. For some designs, this may be necessary to get the best possible end result.

    Painting your Hoverboard

    spray paint hoverboard color

An entirely different thing you may do is to paint your hoverboard. This customization will most likely be irreversible so you should make an effort to do things right the first time around.

Ideally, you should use spray paint for this. Get out your desired spray paint color and prepare it for use. Before spraying, you must tape over all the areas you don’t wish to paint (just like you do when painting walls). Usually, this would be the footpads, LEDs, wheels and any buttons/connectivity ports.

Once everything is taped up, you may start spraying paint on your hoverboard. Whether you wanna do one color everywhere or mix colors in different areas is up to you.

Let the spray paint dry. Once dry, go for a second layer. Then, finally, finish off with a third layer. This should be enough to keep the hoverboard fully covered even if you scratch it at any point in the future.

Once everything is dried up, it’s time to remove the tape and give your hoverboard a go with its new, reinvented design.

    diy creative color splatter

    Conclusion

These were three simple and fun ways in which you can customize your hoverboard to get a look that you love.

All three methods are quite cheap so which is right for you depends on the look you want and the time you want to spend on customizing it.

    Enjoy!

What Is The Hoverboard Weight Limit? https://eridehero.com/hoverboard-weight-limit/ https://eridehero.com/hoverboard-weight-limit/#respond Mon, 07 Oct 2019 10:35:00 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=183 Hoverboards have weight limits to ensure your safety. Get a general idea of hoverboard weight limits on 4.5, 6.5, 8 and 10-inch boards here.

The future is here — finally, hoverboards have hit the scene. A crossover of the latest and greatest technology and transportation, hoverboards are cool, trendy ways to get around.

They can be simple, minimalistic, and easy to use, and can bring a lot of benefits into your life. Whether you use them to get around the office or to jet-set around downtown so you don’t have to pay a fortune for parking, hoverboards are here to stay.

But if you are new to the world of hoverboards, you might be asking a variety of questions, including: do hoverboards have a weight limit?

    Do Hoverboards Have Weight Limits?

    effort

    Yes, hoverboards have weight limits.

While weight limits on hoverboards are perhaps not the first question that comes to mind, understanding exactly how your hoverboard works is key to getting one that is right for you. Obviously, a hoverboard weight limit (or weight minimum) for an eight-year-old is completely different than a hoverboard for heavy adults. But how do you determine what priorities to consider?

Different hoverboards have different weight limits and maximum weights, and some hoverboards are built for heavy people. When looking for a hoverboard’s max weight, understanding the range of possible hoverboard weight capacities is key to choosing the perfect product for you.

How Do I Know The Weight Limit?

Generally speaking, there are ranges in which weights for hoverboards are built to sustain. Hoverboards are built in different sizes. Therefore, the weight capacities increase proportionally with the size of the hoverboard.

The following are general pinpointers for hoverboard weight limits:

    • A 4.5" hoverboard has a 120 lbs weight limit
    • A 6.5" hoverboard has a 220 lbs weight limit
    • An 8" hoverboard has a 265 lbs weight limit
    • A 10" hoverboard has a 330 lbs weight limit

Obviously, these are rough estimates, and you should do your own research when it comes to choosing a product that is right for you. However, this guide should give you a good start as you begin your research.

Different brands will have different suggestions, and each hoverboard is made with a variety of proportions and scales in mind. Cheap hoverboards usually have lower limits than premium top-of-the-line boards do.

What Factors Need To Be Considered

There are several factors to consider when it comes to choosing a hoverboard. The integrity of its construction is going to play a huge factor in how much weight it can hold.

    • Who is the intended customer? If it is marketed as a hoverboard for kids or young teens, then it probably isn’t intended for a 30-year-old spring chicken like yourself. Don’t be tempted to borrow the toys you get your kids for Christmas - it could end poorly.
    • What kind of wheels? Believe it or not, it is the wheels that help set the weight capacity. The larger the wheels, the more weight they theoretically should be able to handle. All-terrain hoverboards usually have sturdy tires, thus providing a bigger weight capacity. (This rule has exceptions, so as always, do your own research).
    • How big is the hoverboard? As mentioned above, there is a general rule of thumb when it comes to how big hoverboards are and how much weight they can hold.

Why Do Hoverboards Have Weight Capacity Limits?

    question

Upon reading this article, you may be asking: why do hoverboards have weight limits in the first place? Why is understanding and abiding by these limits so important?

Well, believe it or not, choosing a hoverboard with the weight limit in mind is dually important — for your safety, and for the safety of your hoverboard.

What Could Happen If You Don’t Abide By The Limits?

    • You can hurt yourself.
We know, we know, you can hurt yourself walking down the sidewalk, but hoverboards can be extra dangerous. If you are not the right weight for the particular product you have, you could cause the machine to malfunction, or at least, not work as well as it is supposed to, and there have been some serious injuries from hoverboarding gone wrong, to the tune of contusions, concussions, broken bones, and the likes of it.
    • You can damage your hoverboard.
If you are too heavy for your hoverboard, you could do some serious damage to your board. The wheels could deflate, and over any kind of rougher terrain, you run the risk of cracking your board down the middle. What’s more, several hoverboards have been known to combust spontaneously, which is less than ideal.
    • The battery life may decrease.
Even if you don’t experience any of these issues, you may notice that your hoverboard simply doesn’t run as well as it could. If you are over the weight capacity, you may notice that your board doesn’t run as smoothly as it could.

    Final Thoughts

Whatever hoverboard you choose, make sure you do your research to make sure you choose one that is correct for you, your proportions, and your lifestyle.

While it may not necessarily be a matter of life or death, it is important to be wise about the decisions you make and the things you invest in. Happy hovering!

What To Do If Your Hoverboard Won’t Turn On https://eridehero.com/hoverboard-wont-turn-on/ https://eridehero.com/hoverboard-wont-turn-on/#respond Fri, 04 Oct 2019 10:15:00 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=175 Today we share 5 common troubleshooting techniques that'll help you fix a hoverboard that won't turn on.

You love your hoverboard, and you take good care of it. However, one day, what if the hoverboard is not turning on? You’re frustrated and worried that you’ll need to scrap the whole thing. Luckily, hoverboard problems have solutions, and through some troubleshooting, you can figure out what’s going on with yours.

Possible Reasons Why A Hoverboard Won’t Turn On

When a hoverboard doesn’t work when you push the power button, there are a handful of possibilities:

    • A hoverboard charger problem
    • A hoverboard battery problem
    • A wiring problem
    • A motherboard problem
    • Hoverboard is defective

Let’s go through these five self-balancing scooter problems and walk through what to do.

    Charger Problems

The reason your hoverboard isn’t turning on might be that it’s not charging properly. This could be the charger’s fault.

How to check for charger problems

    1. First, connect your charger to the wall and make sure you see a green indicator light.
    2. Now, connect your charger to your hoverboard.
    3. What color is the light? It will be red for a little while, even if the battery is full, so give it a few minutes to turn green. If it doesn’t have this brief red time but stays green, the charger might be defective.
    4. If you have access to another charger (the same make as yours), you can try that one to see what happens. If this new charger does turn red first and then green like it’s supposed to, try turning the hoverboard on once it’s fully charged. If the same thing happens with the new charger, however, it actually isn’t a problem with the charger. It’s the board itself, most likely the battery.

    Misaligned charging port

    self balancing scooter charging

Before moving on to battery problems, there’s another possible issue that’s charger-related.

All hoverboards have a charge port, with a locator tab that’s supposed to keep you from plugging the charger in wrongly. However, sometimes that happens because the charger and charge port don’t quite line up naturally.

Unplug the charger and look at the charge port. It should have three pins and a little plastic plug, where you’ll see the locator tab.

Now, just make sure the slot on the charger cord is lined up with the tab. Plug it in. If the charger light turns red and stays red, the board is now charging properly.

    Slow or defective charger

The last charger-related issue: your hoverboard won’t turn on without a charger connected. It is probably because it’s charging very slowly.

This issue is almost always because you’ve been using a defective charger, starting when you first got your hoverboard. Always use the charger the hoverboard came with.

You may want to get a replacement charger if your current one is broken.

    Battery Problems

If you determine that the charger isn’t the problem, it could be the battery.

    Checking for battery issues

It is fairly simple to check to see if it is the battery at fault.

    1. With your charger and hoverboard connected, see if the green indicator LED lights stay green.
    2. Now, turn on the hoverboard.
    3. If the hoverboard starts flashing orange on the battery indicator, the battery is bad. It needs to be replaced. The battery also needs to be replaced if the fully-charged battery doesn’t have the right amount of volts. You can check this with a voltmeter.

    Depleted Battery

Another possible explanation for when a hoverboard won’t turn on or charge is a depleted battery. This is an issue with the battery management system (BMS) on the battery, which is detecting too much amperage during a charge, so it shuts off the power.

To troubleshoot this issue, carefully remove the battery from the hoverboard. You’ll need a screwdriver to take out the little screws, and you’ll need to undo a wire that connects the lights. Once the battery is out, use a voltage meter on the end of the battery’s terminal.

If the voltage is less than 36 (around 33-34 volts), the battery is too low to charge on its own. If it’s actually higher, like over 40, it’s probably an error with the BMS.

In this scenario, it will probably be easiest to take your hoverboard in for repairs and tell them what you’ve learned. You may need to get a new battery.

    Wiring Problems

    electrical cables wiring problem

If you’ve determined it’s not a charger or battery issue, it could be the wiring.

If you haven’t yet, take the cover off your faulty hoverboard and look at the wiring. Does everything look okay, with no frays or damage?

Pay special attention to the wiring of the charger port and its connection to the motherboard. Unplug it and plug it back in, and then try charging and turning the board on.

    Motherboard Problems

If none of the three hoverboard problems above were the cause of your woes, it might be the motherboard. There isn’t anything specific to do to see if the motherboard is the problem; it’s just a process of elimination.

You can buy replacements from your board’s company, so you don’t need to throw out the entire hoverboard. The specific solution to your issue is best discovered with the manufacturer.

    Defective Hoverboard

What if nothing you do seems to work? It could be that the faulty hoverboard is simply defective.

In the manufacturing process, something went wrong, and no troubleshooting will solve the problem.

Check your board model online and see if there were any hoverboard recalls or notices about faulty parts. Even if there aren’t, do call the company and talk to customer service. Explain the situation. You might be able to get a refund or maybe a partial refund, but there’s no guarantee. It’s worth a try, though.

    Halo Rover X Hoverboard Review https://eridehero.com/halo-rover-x-hoverboard-review/ https://eridehero.com/halo-rover-x-hoverboard-review/#respond Thu, 03 Oct 2019 20:03:26 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=726 Introduction

The Halo Rover X is arguably the best hoverboard on the market today. It has it all: amazing built quality, 8.5″ indestructible never-flat tires, training modes, a smartphone app, Bluetooth speakers, incredible motor power, and much more.

    Speed & Range

The Halo Rover X sets the standard of hoverboard quality in today’s market.

Geared with two 400-watt motors (one in each wheel), the Halo Rover X boasts an incredible max speed of 10 miles per hour. As for range, a single charge will take you up to 10 miles. Considering that the average is around 7 miles, this is way above standard.

In short, the Rover X is an absolute powerhouse that’ll work excellently for virtually any use case. Whether you’re commuting in urban areas or want short steep rides in off-road terrain you’re covered.

    Halo Rover X Hoverboard Test

    Construction

The construction and attention to detail on the Halo Rover X are stunning.

For instance, the hoverboard has protective wings crafted in high-grade aluminum, keeping the body safe from the most common impacts.

The 8.5-inch tires are strong as houses as well. The Halo Rover X is actually designed to conquer the harshest terrain obstacles you may come across.

A nice plus is that the hoverboard is IPX4 water-resistant. Whether it be debris or full-on rain, you never fully know the weather conditions, so it’s nice to be able to ride home without the fear of ruining your board for good.

These things combined with 800 watts of motor power allow the Halo Rover X to climb slopes at a 20-degree angle while maintaining a smooth and steady ride.

    Halo Rover X Hoverboard 4

    Safety

All the necessary safety features are present. The charger included is UL certified and the hoverboard itself is both UL2272 and UL2271 certified.

Hoverboard fires and safety issues have been a huge debate in the latest years, but the introduction of the UL-regulations has seen a huge improvement in the overall market quality in the US.

    Support & Customer Service

The guys at Halo Board have excellent customer service. The hoverboard itself comes with a 12-month warranty which is far more than most competitors. They are so confident in their product that they’re happy to offer such a generous warranty, which is a big pro.

They have a phone line and a contact page you can use to quickly get in touch with them.

    Halo Rover X Hoverboard 5

    Downsides

There are practically no downsides with the Halo Rover X. The hoverboard is flawless, but this leads me to my only drawback: the price.

The Halo Rover X isn’t a cheap hoverboard. Nor would we expect it to be with the vast list of features and qualities it boasts. It’s the old good saying of ‘you get what you pay for’. With the Rover X, you pay a notable fee but you get a product that is second to none and has dominated the market for more than a year now.

If you don’t mind spending a little extra to get an absolute unit of a board, this is what you need.

    Halo Rover X Hoverboard 6

    Features

The feature list for the Halo Rover X is long and impressive. We’ve noted down a few of the most important ones below:

    Training Modes

Like other top hoverboards, this one comes with three different riding modes that’ll help you get the hang of it before unleashing its full potential. Beginner, normal and advanced.

    Mobile App

An awesome addition to the hoverboard is the smartphone-compatible app. The app lets you track your current speed and gives you a clear view of how much battery is left on the Halo Rover X.

You can also see how big of a distance you’ve covered along with a map of the ride you’ve taken. You can even turn on and off the hoverboard using the app without having to get down to the actual board itself (long live laziness).

    Bluetooth Speakers

The Halo Rover X hoverboard has a built-in Bluetooth speaker. This allows you to listen to your favorite tunes on the go. Although it isn’t an audiophile quality speaker, we were actually quite impressed by both the volume and clarity it offered.

    Halo Rover X Hoverboard 7

Who Should Buy The Halo Rover X?

The Halo Rover X is for anyone who wants the best of the best. Whether you want to commute, ride off-road or simply have fun in urban areas, the Halo Rover X is the pinnacle of options available.

It does carry a bigger price tag than most competitors but it goes hand in hand with the quality offered.

Packed with features and quality components, this 800-watt monster of a hoverboard brings the competition to shame in almost every way imaginable.

Halo Board is an excellent company that stands by the quality of its products, giving you a 12-month limited warranty on your Halo Rover X unit.

If you have the money to spend, we don’t see a reason not to get the Halo Rover X as it is one of the best boards on the market.

Gotrax Hoverfly ECO Hoverboard Review https://eridehero.com/gotrax-hoverfly-eco-hoverboard-review/ https://eridehero.com/gotrax-hoverfly-eco-hoverboard-review/#respond Thu, 03 Oct 2019 16:09:00 +0000 http://eridehero.com/?p=778 The Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is an extremely affordable hoverboard ideal for kids and beginners especially. With a max speed of 7.4 mph and 400 watts of dual-motor power, this hoverboard provides solid value and enough speed to satisfy most riders in urban areas.

    Speed & Range

It is important to keep in mind that the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is a very budget-friendly hoverboard. Therefore, it’d be weird if it boasted the highest specs and most powerful motors on the market.

That said, the ECO has a top speed of 7.4 miles per hour, which is excellent for a self-balancing scooter this cheap. Its two 200-watt motors – one in each wheel (Read: how a hoverboard works) – allow it to climb slopes at a 15-degree angle which is very decent as well.

The major shortcoming with the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is its short range. It is only able to go around 4 miles on a single charge before having to charge for 3 to 4 hours. For a hoverboard this cheap, however, you gotta expect to meet some drawbacks and overall the ECO is short on those.

    Construction

The Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is a clean-looking hoverboard with seven different colorways. It’s available in black, teal, pink, red, purple, green and an extremely cool-looking ‘Galaxy’ colorway that is ideal for kids.

The hoverboard is made with high-quality materials and is able to hold riders up to 220 lbs. The minimum weight required to activate the hoverboard is 44 lbs.

The Hoverfly ECO is geared with solid rubber 6.5-inch wheels that provide a firm grip on most surfaces. It is not an all-terrain self-balancing scooter, however.

The overall sturdiness of the hoverboard isn’t as impressive as on heavy-duty hoverboards like the Halo Rover X, but that can’t be expected at this price.

    Girl riding Gotrax Hoverfly ECO

    Safety

Gotrax is a reputable company that designs electric rideables with kids in mind especially. Therefore, safety is their main concern. This care for safety is evident in all the design choices they make. They don’t make the world’s fastest hoverboards, they keep things simple, fun and safe.

Like all of their other products, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is UL safety certified and thoroughly tested against all kinds of common issues. This means that both the board, the battery, and the charger meet all the latest safety standards.

On the front, there are two LED lights that’ll make you visible in traffic in low-light scenarios. As a cool little detail, the LED lights will change color as you go.

    Customer Service

Gotrax Hoverfly Eco Hoverboard Side view

The customer service that Gotrax offers is solid. They’re a US-based company with purely US support plus free shipping and tracking.

We’ve tested their service before and they usually reply within 24 hours to our inquiries and if you need a faster response they also have a dedicated phone line on 844-4GO-TRAX (844-446-8729).

Gotrax has a 30-day return policy which is great since you can get to test and see if the product suits your needs without fully committing to the product.

As for warranty, all products come with a 90-day warranty which is the most commonly seen warranty in this field. With the product price considered, a 90-day warranty is more than fair.

If 90 days isn’t enough for you, as an addon, you can always buy a 1-year extended warranty from Gotrax here.

    Downsides

Now on to the less fun stuff. What are the drawbacks of this hoverboard?

Although there don’t seem to be many, the obvious one is its short range. 4 miles on a charge is lower than most competitors. The low range seems to be a recurrent issue with the Gotrax products. This hoverboard is therefore not ideal for commuting and longer trips as you’ll end up carrying it home over your shoulder because it runs dry quickly.

Whereas many other hoverboards offer smartphone app integration and built-in Bluetooth speakers, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO offers none of that. Those features are especially enjoyed by kids so you may want to consider if a slightly more expensive model would be more ideal for your kid.

For such a small range, the ECO takes quite a long time to charge. 3-4 hours is a bit too much when it only yields 4 miles of fun.

That said, the value you’re getting is great!

Who Should Buy The Gotrax Hoverfly ECO?

The ECO is ideal for kids, beginners, and people who just want to try out the trend. If you wanna ride in rough terrain or commute to and from work, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO isn’t for you.

Short and fun trips in urban areas without too much bumpy terrain is where the ECO excels. It is fairly lightweight easy to use for kids just getting started.

Safety is also a popular concern that the Hoverfly ECO completely covers. The hoverboard has undergone lots of testing and absolutely aced its quality exam.

If you care about budget and getting a lot of bang for your buck, the Gotrax Hoverfly ECO is a solid choice any day of the week.
